Russian Invasion Creating Food Crisis by preventing Ukraine’s spring wheat crop from being planted:
Ukraine is the world’s third largest supplier of wheat and a major supplier of corn and sunflower oil. If these crops do not get planted in the next few weeks, the crop will not yield anywhere near what the world needs and there will be major shortages.
Russia and Ukraine together supply 30 % of the wheat supplied to the rest of the world. Any number of factors caused by this war could eliminate or substantially reduce that crop, including sanctions, disruptions to planting, harvesting, distribution, or for disruption to the supply of fertilizer, diesel fuel, and other essential requirements for growing these crops and bringing them to market.
The reduced supply of corn and wheat from Russia and Ukraine will result in dangerous food shortages worldwide. Wealthier countries will see higher prices but poorer countries that cannot pay higher prices to get enough of the available supply will have a food crisis that will least to civil unrest.
Senator Moran of Kansas proposes the following measures that will allow the United States to reduce the severity of this coming food crisis:
- Reduce tariffs on commodities that are used to create fertilizer, to reduce the cost and increase availability of fertilizer to farmers
- Increase production of diesel fuel, reduce the cost of this major expense in planting, harvesting, and transporting crops
- Arrange government purchases of wheat and corn that will be used as part of humanitarian food aid programs, which will provide farmers with the guaranteed buyer that will allow them to plan for and finance the planting of larger crops

Thank You Senator Moran, for Your pointing out the dire situation the world is facing regarding hunger.. The winter wheat crop here is sketchy because of drought, and as You pointed out, fertilizer prices are through the roof, or unavailable. And of course, this will effect the upcoming corn and bean crops. I hope You can gain the attention of Your fellow legislators and the administration, that this needs to be dealt with NOW. I can’t imagine what the price of bread and pizza will be in a year.
And thanks especially for pointing out the horrible situation facing millions in the 3rd world.
However, this horrible war that Russia has unleashed, is in response to our own government lying to them, for the last 30 years,, and over and over not honoring agreements that Nato would not expand to their borders. Putin warned the west, many times of his concerns. He felt he finally had to react to protect the integrity of his own country. It’s as much our own fault. Own up to it. If his security was guaranteed, this could stop tomorrow.
