Russia deployed its Yars ICBM missile at the Kozelsk base in the Kaluga region, southwest of Moscow, the RIA news agency reported Wednesday.
What makes Yars ICBM Special
The Yars missile was developed in the 2000s. It is capable of carrying multiple thermonuclear warheads and is said to be able to pierce the missile shield used by the United States and its allies.
Yars was a Mobile Missile
Yars was originally deployed on mobile rocket launchers. A mobile launcher can be relocated to random locations so that it does not become a target for the enemy.
Russia Deployed Yars ICBMs in Silos
The Kozelsk regiment is the first of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces to upgrade to silo-based Yars missiles, according to RIA. This is an initial step as part of a program to modernize Russia’ s Strategic Missile Forces as part of an effort to modernize its military.
