Russian False Flag Plot Foiled by the Ukraine Security Service – a Russian-sponsored sabotage team planned to shoot down a RUSSIAN passenger airliner and falsely accuse Ukraine of the act, in an attempt to justify further escalation of the Russian war in Ukraine. The Russian agents were tracked down and “neutralized” by the Ukraine Security Service, as reported by the Kyiv Independent.

This type of action, where a country stages an attack on itself and tries to make it look like the enemy did it, is called a False Flag operation. The country that staged the false flag operation then will ensure that it’s description as a heinous act of the enemy is widely publicized before they use it to start or escalate a war.
This would not be the first time that Russia has used a False Flag operation – in 1968, Czechoslovakia was beginning to open its country to more democratic reforms, and Russia planned several false flag operations there, which included Soviet agents posing as western journalists, plots to murder Soviet wives of Czech husbands, but the one that got the most publicity was one in which Soviet operatives planted weapons labeled “Made in USA” in Czechoslovakia and the USSR used this and other actions of Soviet agents and saboteurs as a pretext to send in the Red Army to “protect” Czechoslovakia. These False Flag plots were revealed years later when previously-classified KGB records became public, and as the result of interviews with a former Czech intelligence officer used as background in a Foreign Policy article.
Reusing tactics from the old KGB playbook is not a surprise, as Vladimir Putin is a former KGB officer.
